Alexander Khubeev on his piece “Don’t leave the room”
Watch my interview with composer Alexander Khubeev on his piece “Don’t leave the room”. He incorporated sign language as part of the visual perception of this piece. Sign language uses gestures, body language, and lip shapes instead of sounds. The piece is a personal art statement of Alexander Khubeev against censorship and self-censorship. It’s based on the text of the poem by Joseph Brodsky (a dissident who became a victim of the Soviet system) “Don’t leave the room”.

Alexander Khubeev music is played in concerts held in more than 25 countries around Europe, Asia, South and North America on such festivals as “Venice Biennale”, “Darmstadt Ferienkurse”, “Gaudeamus Musicweek”, “MATA”, “Gergiev Festival”, “Quantensprunge”, “Ultima”, “Transit Festival”, “Mixtur”, “SPOR”, “Pharos International Contemporary Music Festival”, “Moscow Forum”, “Diaghilev Festival”, ”reMusik.org”, ”Moscow Autumn” and many others. He is co-founder and curator of Composition Course reMusik.org in Saint Petersburg and artistic director of International Academy of Young Composers in Tchaikovsky city and lecturer in Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory.
